A Collective Society
Communist like to emphasize the collective life of a society rather than the individual life of families. The state ran the economy and citizens were not allowed to run their own farms. Peasants worked on collective farms were all of their output went to the government. In many different communist nations they also had collective living. For example in China from the 1950's to the 1980's the peasants lived in communes. The housework, cooking and mostly everything else was done collectively rather than individually. In Russia many families would live in the same apartment as one another. This would also help in making sure that no one was criticizing or plotting against the government.
Lack of Freedom of Speech
one freedom that cictizens in Communist nations rarely have is freedom of speech. Everything the people say is monitored even when you think your in private. Your closest friend might tell on you if they think it will give them a better chance at advancing. all ideas had to line up to what the Communist party believed in. Religous believers, artist and intellectuals suffered harrassment and opression for their ideas. If you were caught critizing the government you could get into serious trouble or even end up dead. In a communist soceity you need to line up to the beliefs of thoose around you.
Production
The production level and quality in Communist nations was very poor. Due to lack of payment workers put very little effort into there job. Therefore the quality of the product they produced were very poor because the workers had no incentive to make better goods. Also the government focused mainly on industry goods, such as coal, iron or steel. The state lacked a reason to produce household items that the citizens wanted. Items like cars, washing machines and other goods the people wanted took a back sit to what the government thought they needed. All goods in a Commmunist nation have a set price so they remain affordable but because everything is so affordable it became almost impossible to gather. there was a shourtage of just about everything that the citizens wanted. When they did find something valuble the demand was very high for that item.
